Cheering with Purpose: Living God’s Story in the Stand

At Legacy Christian School, service is not just something students do; it is a way of participating in God’s story. Guided by the principles of Teaching for Transformation, students are invited to see themselves as image bearers of God called to live out His kingdom in the world around them. Every action becomes an opportunity to notice God at work, respond with compassion, and participate in His redemptive story.

Each year, one of the highlights of that commitment comes through our partnership with Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI). At the start of every school year, Legacy connects with SOMI to find meaningful ways for IPOD (5th and 6th Grade) students to serve. Each year, the request is the same: to have students show up as “Fans in the Stands” at the Unified basketball tournaments.
At first glance, it may seem simple. Sit in the stands. Cheer for the athletes. Yet what the students bring transforms the experience into something much larger. Their cheering overflows with energy and joy, some leaving without voices by the end of the games. Others take the time to learn athletes’ names from coaches, offering encouragement personally and making each athlete feel seen and celebrated. Many step beyond the stands to give high fives, hugs, and words of affirmation, creating moments of genuine connection and demonstrating God’s love in action.
Through these experiences, students practice the four foundational TfT practices: remembering God’s story, noticing God at work, responding as disciples, and living kingdom life in community. They remember that each person is made in God’s image, notice the unique gifts and dignity of every athlete, respond with compassion and intentional encouragement, and live out God’s kingdom in a tangible way, showing others that they belong.
Time and again, parents and coaches ask, “Where are these students from? This is amazing!” The impact is clear, but the transformative part is how the students themselves are shaped. They begin to see themselves not just as spectators, but as participants in God’s work, called to create spaces where everyone feels valued, included, and celebrated.
Experiences like this teach lessons that extend far beyond the classroom. Students develop a deeper understanding of inclusion, community, and discipleship. They see how small acts of service and presence, cheering, celebrating, connecting reflect God’s love and invite others into His story. Each encounter becomes a stepping stone in forming hearts that notice needs, respond with courage and grace, and live faithfully as God’s image bearers.
Legacy Christian School is grateful for its continued partnership with Special Olympics Michigan and for the students who strengthen that relationship year after year. Through their energy, empathy, and willingness to show up, they live out God’s kingdom in tangible ways.
Being a “fan in the stands” is not just about cheering. It is about joining God’s story, responding as His disciple, and showing the world that every person belongs.
