Reflecting on the success of Legacy's New Cell Phone and Smartwatch Policy

As we look back on the school year so far, a notable change implemented in August 2024 was the updated cell phone and smartwatch policy at our West Campus. This policy fosters a more engaged, present, and focused student body. Here’s why this policy has been a success for our students and school community.

1. Encouraging Face-to-Face Interactions

One of the biggest benefits of the policy has been the increased emphasis on in-person socialization. With students putting their phones away upon arrival at school, the mornings have become an opportunity for meaningful conversations with peers. Rather than isolating themselves on screens, students have built friendships, strengthened relationships, and started their day with real, face-to-face interactions.

Kristen Lautenbach, our 5th/6th Language Arts teacher, shares her observations: "Before school, I see 5th-grade students playing outside or laughing and chatting in my room, instead of being huddled around phones. Starting the day by building connections and engaging in community helps set a solid foundation for the rest of the day!"

2. Reducing Distractions in the Classroom

Smartphones and smartwatches, while useful in many ways, can also be a source of distraction. Notifications, social media, and games can easily divert students' attention from their studies. By ensuring these devices remain in lockers or backpacks throughout the day, students have been able to better focus on their lessons, leading to more productive learning experiences.

3. Promoting Digital Responsibility

Technology is an integral part of our lives, and learning to use it responsibly is an essential skill. This policy has helped students understand appropriate times for device usage and set boundaries that encourage healthier digital habits. By learning to prioritize their education and interactions over screen time, students have developed self-discipline and a greater sense of responsibility.

Matt Veltema, our 6-8th Grade Bible and Math teacher, has noticed the difference: "Mornings before school have been the most noticeable observation. Students gather together to hang out, talk to each other, and when the weather is nice they sometimes play basketball outside together. It has been refreshing to see students interacting with each other before the day starts rather than staring at a screen in the hallway."

A Positive Step Forward

Legacy’s commitment to fostering a focused, interactive, and responsible student body has been evident in the success of this update. By working together—students, parents, and educators—we have created a learning environment where technology enhances education rather than hinders it.

Stefanie Goudeaux, our Spanish Immersion Lead, sums it up well: "I love seeing kids walking down the hallway talking to each other, instead of having their face looking down at a device."

We appreciate the support of our school community in upholding these changes and look forward to seeing their continued positive impact for the rest of the school year!
